Who this applies to
This guide focuses on limited diagnostic radiographers: individuals other than licensed practitioners who perform limited diagnostic radiography under a licensed practitioner's general supervision.

What training must include
Michigan requires completion of an approved program or at least 40 hours of relevant training. Training must include both didactic and clinical components, and limited diagnostic radiography programs must be competency-based.
The required subjects are:
- Fundamentals of healthcare
- Medical terminology
- Patient care and management
- Human anatomy and physiology
- Imaging production and evaluation
- Imaging equipment and radiation production
- Radiation protection and radiobiology
The curriculum must also address the limited radiographic procedures the operator will perform.
Online learning is one part of the process. A quiz or course-completion certificate alone does not demonstrate completion of the required clinical component. R 333.5212
What changes in March 2027
The rules took effect March 13, 2024 and established a three-year conditional qualification period. During that period, an individual who does not meet the active, temporary, or limited qualification requirements may qualify conditionally with the required written assurance of competency.
That assurance must identify the equipment and procedures the individual is competent to use, come from a licensed practitioner under whose general supervision the individual is or was employed, and be available for inspection.
By March 13, 2027, an operator relying on conditional status must meet an applicable active, temporary, or limited qualification pathway. Experience alone does not make conditional status permanent. R 333.5210(2)(d)
Match qualification to the examinations performed
Michigan lists limited qualifications for chest, extremities, spine, skull and sinuses, and podiatric radiography. Each category has a specific examination list.
Build each operator's training plan around the procedures they are expected and qualified to perform. Do not assume a qualification covers every examination of a nearby body region.
Understand the supervision requirements
General supervision means a licensed practitioner directs and controls the work and remains responsible for quality, radiation protection, and technical performance. The practitioner does not have to be present during every procedure.
Direct supervision requires the responsible individual to be present in at least an adjacent area and immediately available to provide assistance and direction throughout the procedure. Supervision definitions
The student exemption for an approved program requires direct supervision by a licensed practitioner or a medical radiologic technologist who meets Part 5 requirements. It is not an automatic exemption for anyone taking an online course. R 333.5209(2)(a)
Before clinical training begins, confirm the learner's qualification or exemption and arrange the supervision appropriate to that pathway. The 40-hour training provision itself requires a clinical component but does not independently specify a universal direct-supervision requirement for every activity. R 333.5212
Keep training records and plan for continuing education
Limited diagnostic radiographers must retain proof of completing the applicable program or training. R 333.5212(5)
Continuing education is a separate requirement: 12 CE credits, using qualifying activities, with evidence of participation. The rule specifies an initial deadline within 24 months of the rules' effective date and subsequent periods every 24 months after initial completion.
